Shut down the piracy sites.

There are many high profile piracy sites, such as the Pirate Bay. The government can shut down these sites. In fact, the Russian government is doing that, so why cant the U.S. follow suit. These sites are illegal, so the government should shut them down. Doing this would be like hitting piracy in the nuts. With a golf club.

Plus, with less piracy, publishers wouldn't have to punish legitimate custormers with crap DRM. Everybody wins, expect pirates, and those bastards dont count.

What do you think?

EDIT: I no longer consider this a good idea. Excellent arguements guys.

Sorry to "blow up" the pledging bubble, but pre-release & beta runs have similar effects if not outright demonstrate what if any market solid potential to dev teams already at work.

What you are proposing is to lease a hypothesis, i've seen too many businesses go bankrupt before showing results -- even investors gamble, but we're customers expecting a product & not some empty promises. Not claiming, SD would fail filling its part of such deals... theoretically.

Let's put it this way....

You wanna fight piracy? Then don't actively fight piracy because it's useless and angers legit users. DRM is the proof of that, it simply doesn't work  on top of costing money that could go into making the actual game better. At best it's gonna slow down the process but it's not gonna do anything to stop it. Look at how many people went out of their way to pirate Spore just to show their anger to EA.

The best article I've ever saw about ways to fight piracy is this one http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/experienced-points/5961-10-Ways-to-Fight-Piracy

The guy points out a lot of things that could actually help fight piracy. Though I would add good lenght demos to his "Provide a Demo" point because I've had my share of either miss-leading demos or demos that are so short you barely get an idea of the game.
