Whats goes on everyday, Stardock Forums, life, and all

Starcraft is one of the biggest games these days, especially in Korea. People say its the best game ever made.

Personally, I think its just over rated. And, its a way of life for some people. No game can be that good.

Listen, Starcraft is a good game, but not amazing. It came out in 1998, people. Besides, the graphics suck for that age. Starcraft 2's graphics look worse.

To summarize, I think people essentially worshipping the game is pathetic. It's just over rated.

I need your comments, people!

(P.S. My favorite games are: X3: Reunion, C&C 3, and Half-Life 2.)

Zerg unstoppable? Fielding in so many Overlords that your enemy can't target? What the heck?

That's brainless stuff. If you play an enemy worth fighting, you'd think twice about getting those Overlords in there. Heck, you might not even HAVE Overlords to make units with - that's classic, relentless Overlord hunting.

Carriers? From Protoss? Spore Colonies 8 and 9 deep? Yow. If you tried that against a decent player, you'd get beaten to a bloody pulp. Carriers are usable, but they're not exactly what you would call the most-used Protoss unit. Only newbies use those, and mostly on money maps. There's not a lot of strategic depth there. If there's mineral fields everywhere and unlimited money, then a lot of it becomes just a crapshoot. Not totally, of course, but the APS difference and tech-planning doesn't count for as much in a map with unlimited money and big distances.

I can understand where a lot of people might not appreciate Starcraft if they can't play it. It's hard to appreciate art when you can't tell the difference between a masterpiece and milk carton. So yes, if you think Starcraft is overrated, you probably can't play it very well.

Starcraft is easily one of the best games ever made. Why? Look at it...

Compare each race. Compare their units. Their abilities. What makes them special. You can do the same in Warcraft 3, even. Consider, now, how evenly balanced it is. How despite your special advantages playing any of those races, any of the other races can still form a paper to your rock.

To give you a recent game that should be fresh in your mind, check out Sins of a Solar empire. While I'm greatly enjoying it, I was dissapointed at the three races. The differences between them aren't nearly extreme enough as they should be. Some of their techs differ and the secondary abilities of their ships differ, but otherwise the game is set up more like Warcraft 2. Grunt = Footman, Troll Axethrower = Archer. You can also look at the first Homeworld, where both sides were basically symmetrical. I was expecting a far more unique spin to each race.

Why wasn't it more unique? Well, that's simple. It's not that easy. That's why a game like Starcraft is praised. They did something very few have been able to accomplish.

Different races, eh?

Well, check out a little something called Universe at War: Earth Assault.

By the way.. Starcraft was also more than was mentioned... People seem to forget ease of Multiplayer on Battle.net , the ladders, the excellent map editor. These tools allowed the game to have the longevity it is enjoying. Another factor in its success would be the graphics, while back then they may not have been the most advanced graphics ever, they allowed almost everyone to run the game and served their purpose very well.. Another thing to say about the graphics and blizzard is their artistic skills? Cutting Edge graphics is something you can find in many games, but in starcraft there was attention to the small details, the animation of units and the choice of colors all blended to make a game that was much more vibrant and alive than most ''cutting edge'' games out there. The musical score in starcraft was really great as well, another thing that added to a great ambiance.

Soo...many things play a factor in what makes SC a success, you cant narrow it down or shoot it down as simply as most people seem to do.. Art, Animation, Music, Gameplay, Ease of Play, Replayability, Attention to the small details etc... (In fact, Bliz pretty much always said it.. Easy to play, hard to master).. Anyway, all this and more make of SC franchise what it was and still is today .

Roxlimn, you are making the mistake of assuming that I have not taken out some of the best players in the game (and I have). From your comments, I take your skill level is really not in the top echelons of the game, or you are making some gross assumptions about the maps. ----- As for GeneralEtrius, you make a thread asking if StarCraft is over-rated, and then attack when examples of the opinion of it "not" being over-rated are given. Just stating an opinion is not enough - you must provide substance. I suggest next time you call your thread "StarCraft is over-rated" rather than "Starcraft: Is it over-rated?". The thread name you used does open the door to those who have a different opinion than you. ----- Also, this is a forum for GalCiv, and I did make sure to temper any comments I have with showing some of the positive aspects of GalCiv that have provided me with similar enjoyment to what I achieved with StarCraft. Please keep this is mind.

I agree with everyone else that Starcraft deserves its high acclaim and praise. I remember eagerly awaiting its release back when it changed from "Warcraft-in-space" to the iteration of style and design that it is today. Although the comments that people have left so far have been relatively polite and well-structured for the most part, if you were to post that same statement in another forum, chances are that you would quickly be bombarded with multiple comments of n00b, troll, bot, etc. It's most likely that if you went to a board that hates on Starcraft, you would find those who agree with you, but on a neutral board like this, you will get honest opinions and assessments of the game. Based upon the number of posts that are FOR Starcraft versus the posts that are AGAINST Starcraft, I think even you can see that Starcraft must have done something right for it to have appealed to this many people and more, even if you don't see or understand those reasons.

Starcraft should come standard in the 'games' section, right next to Solitaire and Minesweeper.

Well, it looks like trying to get people to accept my opinion is moot now...

Why do they need to? Isn't your opinion good enough for you? "Let a hundred flowers bloom and a hundred schools of thought contend," as they say. Someone who demands agreement to validate his opinion probably doesn't have much faith in it to begin with.
